Saturday Night Community meals
St. Paul’s participates in the community meals served at Golden Ears United Church on Saturday evenings. Specifically, we organize and serve meals on all of the 5th Saturdays of the year. In 2019, for example, we cook and serve on March 30, June 29, August 31 and November 30th.
Our responsibilities include preparing the food, setting up tables and chairs in Golden Ears’ fellowship hall, serving the food, table knock down and washing and putting away dishes. It is a big task and we have done an admirable job.
Our method of preparation is unique among the churches who serve because we actually cook the meals in Golden Ears’ kitchen. Rather than ask for volunteers to bring casseroles from their homes, we purchase the food and our kitchen crew arrives at 3 p.m. on the Saturdays in question. Our table set up and serving volunteers show up at 5:30 p.m. and we serve at 6:15 p.m. we serve anywhere from 80 to 100 guests.
We purchase the food and cook it at the kitchen there because we were recipients of a grant from the Maple Ridge Kiwanis Club. The $1,000 grant apportioned between the 4 meals allows us to put on a pretty good spread.
